Bleeding gum is a common oral health problem. It might be because of something simple, like using the wrong technique when you brush or floss. Or it could be a sign of a health condition you need to check out. The main cause of bleeding gums is the buildup of plaque at the gum line. This leads to a condition called gingivitis, or inflamed gums. Plaque that is not removed will harden into tartar. This will lead to increased bleeding and a more advanced form of gum and jaw bone disease known as periodontitis.

Other causes of bleeding gums include:

  • Any bleeding disorders
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Brushing too hard
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy
  • Ill-fitting dentures or other dental appliances
  • Improper flossing
  • Infection, which can be either in a tooth or the gum
  • Leukemia, a type of blood cancer
  • Scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency
  • Use of blood thinners
  • Vitamin K deficiency

What steps you can take at home to fight bleeding gums?

The main reason for bleeding gums is inadequate oral health care – Hence, oral care has to be given priority.

  • Brush your teeth twice daily along with gum massage
  • Use a medium bristle toothbrush. this will help stimulate your gums, strengthen the tissues and prevent bleeding gums.
  • Replace your toothbrushes every 2-3months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed.
  • Floss daily- Flossing helps in removing plaque and food particles stuck along the gum line which could otherwise lead to bleeding gums. be gentle
  • Smoking is a major cause of severe gum disease. Quitting smoking can help your gums heal and stop the bleeding
  • Maintaining a stress-free and Balanced Lifestyle- There is a link between gum disease and emotional stress. Emotional stress has a negative impact on the immune system and a weakened immune system cant fight gum infection.
  • Eating a proper and balanced diet is very important:
    avoid eating between meals.

Eating foods rich in vitamin C can boost your immune system and help fight gum infections that cause bleeding gums.
Oranges, Sweet potatoes, Red peppers, Carrots
Taking vitamin K supplements can also relieve bleeding gums. Vitamin K is an important nutrient because it helps blood clot. A deficiency can cause easy bleeding, and one study found that it could lead to bleeding gums.
Foods rich in vitamin K include:
spinach, green cabbage, kale, mustard leaves

  • Drink green tea:
Drinking green tea daily can also reverse periodontal disease and stop bleeding gums. Green tea contains catechin, a natural antioxidant that can reduce the body’s inflammatory response to bacteria in the mouth.
  • Rinse your mouth with salt water:
Because bacteria and inflammation in the mouth cause gum disease, regularly rinsing your mouth with a mixture of warm salt water can also reduce bacteria and stop bleeding gums. Add half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of lukewarm water and rinse your mouth for a few seconds three to four times a day. If the bleeding is because of an injury or trauma, rinsing with a mixture of saltwater also keeps your mouth clean and removes bacteria that could cause infection.
When you use either of the above remedies, your gums should stop bleeding within a week. However, if you notice that the bleeding persists in the second
week, you should seek further medical treatment. You must visit our team of expert dentists in Noida and let them perform a diagnosis and treat the root cause of gum disease.
