STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE:
ORAL EXAMINATIONS:
- Prior to proceeding to tooth whitening alternatives, it is advised that the patient comes into the dental clinic to have a comprehensive oral examination that consists of a full medical, dental, and social history.
- This will allow us to see if there is any treatment that needs to be done such as restorations to remove caries, and to assess whether or not the patient will be a good candidate to have the whitening done.
- Then, your dentist will use a shade chart to show you your current shade and which shade your teeth can get to after whitening treatment.
CLEANING / SCALING :
- We would then debride (clean) the tooth surface with an ultrasonic scaler, hand instruments, and polish teeth using a prophy paste to remove extrinsic stains.
- This will allow a clean surface for achieving the maximum benefits of teeth whitening.
LIP AND GUM PROTECTION :
- Since the whitening agent can damage your lips and gums, we will use certain tools to protect those parts.
- First, we will put a lip retractor into your mouth.
- Then comes the saliva ejector. Next, cotton balls are placed between your teeth and the inner surface of your mouth.
- Finally, we will apply a gingival barrier to protect your gums from the whitening agent to reduce the risk of a chemical burn to the soft tissues.
APPLICATION OF WHITENING AGENT (WHITENERS) ON YOUR TEETH :
- The procedure usually involves applying whitening gel or agent onto the teeth, removing it and reapplying it several times.
- Depending on the current shade of your teeth, we will adjust the agent concentration accordingly.

Brushing teeth right after a teeth whitening treatment is not advised. Individuals must allow a few hours to pass before brushing their teeth for the first time after treatment.
There are many types of teeth whitening treatment. Teeth whitening isn’t permanent. The effect of each treatment differs from a few months to up to 1 year, it varies from person to person. Consuming tooth staining foods or drinks that have a strong color may compromise the effectiveness of the treatment. These include food and drinks containing tannins such as; coffee, tea, red wines, and curry.
Teeth whitening doesn’t work on dentures, crowns, fillings or veneers. If there are tooth-colored restorations in your mouth, they will likely need replacement after bleaching.
You will need to get a comprehensive dental checkup for us to advise whether whitening is right for you. If certain restorations are to be repeated, or new treatment required before proceeding for whitening, a thorough checkup will be required.
To extend the longevity of newly whitened teeth, we recommend:
Maintain home bleaching or visit us for top-up bleaching.
Control the habits causing discoloration- smoking for 48 hours.
Avoiding dark-colored foods and beverages for at least a week after whitening.
Whenever possible, sipping dark-colored beverages with a straw.
Practicing excellent oral hygiene – brushing and flossing morning and at night.
Mild sensitivity to hot or cold liquids may occur. This usually passes within 1 – 2 days. We will put you on desensitizing paste before the procedure, continue using the same, apply the paste on the sensitive area, leave for 2-3 minutes and then brush your teeth. Discontinue paste once sensitivity settles.
Teeth whitening isn’t recommended for people who are allergic to dental whiteners, pregnant and breastfeeding women, children under 16 years old, and patients with gum inflammation and exposed roots.
Doctor’s visits are sometimes real pain, but we try to be there for you when you need us, at your preferred time. Simply follow these few steps to ensure a stressless visit.
POST TEETH WHITENING INSTRUCTIONS :
- Follow the white diet during (between sittings) and 24-48hrs after teeth whitening.
- Avoid the use of chlorhexidine containing mouthwash for at least 48hrs. Use fluoride mouthwash for at least 2weeks.
- Do not smoke for 48 hours.
- Use smudge-proof lipstick.
- Avoid foods and beverages that stain (turmeric, red sauce, blueberries, coffee, tea, etc.). Avoid foods and drinks that are acidic.
- Practice excellent oral hygiene – brushing and flossing morning and at night.
- Avoid extremely hot or cold liquids. Mild sensitivity to hot or cold liquids may occur. This usually passes within 1 – 2 days. Continue using desensitizing paste, apply the paste on the sensitive area, leave for 2-3 minutes and then brush your teeth. Stop using desensitizing paste when sensitivity subsides.
- Immediate whitening results can be quite dramatic due to minor dehydration of your teeth. It is normal for the color to tone down somewhat after treatment when your teeth rehydrate to a natural white tone.
- Long-term results vary from patient to patient. This can depend on the original shade of your teeth and include habits such as smoking or drinking colored beverages (red wine, coffee, tea, etc.)
- Touch-up treatments may be needed every 6-12 months to retain color.
